George Washington Birthday Celebration

On February 22, 2012 the Sherman County Arts Council will hold a George Washington Birthday Celebration at the Loup City Diner Meeting Room, located at 705 O St in Loup City, NE.

The celebration will be from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM with a presentation by Sherman County Historical Society member Dennis Welty at 1:00 PM and another at 3:00 PM.

Refreshments will be provided with the celebration sponspored by King’s, Bet’s Little Shoppe, Loup City Diner, and Goldenrod Gallery.

Monsanto Grant Fund Opportunity For Area Schools

The America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education program has been introduced to help farmers positively impact their communities and support local schools. This program is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and gives farmers the opportunity to nominate their local school district to compete for a grant up to $25,000. In all, the program will allow local school districts in 1,245 counties across 39 states to add over $2.3 million to their math and science programs.

Farmers have until April 15, 2012 to make their nominations. This is a chance show support and help your school receive up to $25,000.

2012 Nebraska Tourism Grants

The Nebraska Department of Travel and Tourism has announced there is $125,000 of its operating budget available for tourism marketing grants for 2012. There are three
grant categories: 1) Promotion of an Event, 2) Promotion of a Region, and 3) General Marketing. The minimum grant amount that can be requested is $2,000 and the maximum is $10,000. The grants are available for both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. No more than two applications can be accepted by a single applicant. Grant applications are due by January 23, 2012.

Nebraska Microenterprise Tax Credit

The Nebraska Microenterprise Tax Credit applicaiton for 2012 can be turned in anytime after November 1, 2011. Eligible applicants are business with five or fewer employees (microenterprise) and that are adding new investment in 2012 with regards to employees, equipment, leases, or capital improvements. There are $2 million dollars worth of tax credits available to use over a two year period, with a maximum of $10,000 available per applicant. This is an extremely competitive program with acceptance based on a first come, first serve basis, and it is recommended that applications (using estimated investment figures) for 2012 should be turned in as soon as possible and ideally before the end of February.

Christmas Cheer

This Saturday, December 17th from 5 to 7:30 pm, the Loup City Chamber of Commerce will be hosting its annual Christmas Cheer promotion at the Loup City Community Center.

The event will have a Scavenger Hunt/Poker Run, Chili & Chicken Noodle Soup, Coffee, Cider & Hot Chocolate, Santa Claus, Santa’s Workshop for the kids, local vendors selling their goods, and a silent auction.

Please consider doing your Christmas Shopping locally, rather than fighting the crowds, waiting in line, and spending gas money driving out of town.

USDA mortgage rates now at 3.5%

The USDA has just announced that they have lowered their interest rate to 3.5% on the Section 502 Direct Loan Program, the lowest rate offered by the organization.

Junk Jaunt 2011

The annual Junk Jaunt will be rolling through central Nebraska and Loup City from September 23-25. Loup City will have participants in and around town with a local map that will be pushlished in the near future.

Sherman County recieves $150,000 through the USDA IRP Program

USDA Rural Development Nebraska State Director Maxine Moul announced the award of $150,000 Intermediary Relending Program (IRP) loan funds to Sherman County Economic Development Corporation.

The Rural Development funds will aid Sherman County EDC in addressing the special financing needs of businesses in Sherman County through the establishment of a revolving loan fund that will provide low interest loans for business and community development. In addition to IRP funds, the borrower and a commercial lender will also contribute toward overall project financing.

“The intermediary relending program provides gap financing to partner with local commercial lenders. This assists rural businesses in accessing capital needed to start, expand, and grow their businesses,” said Moul. “The partnership with Sherman County is a great example of government, commercial lenders and entrepreneurs working together to bring jobs and wealth to rural Nebraska.”

Sherman County EDC has established a revolving loan fund plan and has committed 50 percent of the IRP funds to women owned businesses as an underrepresented group. Six businesses have expressed interest in receiving assistance from the IRP revolving loan fund for business expansion and/or development projects.

Sherman County Economic Development Director stated, “We are pleased to be working with the USDA in promoting business development in Sherman County. This funding represents an excellent resource that is available to anyone in the County looking at either starting a business or for the expansion of an existing enterprise. We’ve seen a substantial increase in business development over the past few years in this area, and this is a program that will help ensure that this progress continues.”

USDA Rural Development serves as the lead federal agency for rural development needs by offering financial and technical assistance to individuals, businesses and communities. USDA Rural Development programs include funding for day care centers, fire trucks and other community facility projects; the purchase, construction or repair of homes; loans and guarantees to rural businesses to save or create jobs and renewable energy; and loans and grants for water and sewer utility projects.

Fourth of July Weekend

There are mulitple events going on this 4th of July Weekend in Loup City, specifically on July 2nd.

On July 2nd, we start the day off with the Farmer’s Market at the Sherman County Courthouse and the City Wide Garage Sales (See Events Tab for more information).

Later in the evening, we have the second annual “Cruise Night” starting at around 8:00 with popcorn being served at the newly renovated Sherman County Historical Society Research Center at 704 O Street.

At 9:30 PM, we will have the annual Fireworks Display at Sherman Lake.

With the weather starting to finally feel like July, a dip in the water at Sherman Lake, Bowman’s, or even the local pool will feel very refreshing. Just a reminder that Bowman’s Lake is no longer a State Recreation area, thus you may visit it without a State Park permit. The Bowman’s Lake Committee is working very hard to put together plans to turn the area into a viable destination for locals and tourists alike.
