After months of discussion to establish a memorial to honor all veterans, the idea became a reality with the formation of the Sherman County Veterans Memorial Committee in January of 2005. The committee consisted of two members from the Loup City American Legion Burrows Post 48, Auxiliary Unit 48 and Sons of American Legion #48 along with representatives from Ashton, Rockville and Litchfield Legion Posts. The Veterans Walk is located in the northwest corner of the Sherman County Courthouse Square. The site has 4 pillars which have the capability to have names engraved on both sides. Benches are placed between pillars, allowing a place for reflection of the sacrifices made by all service personnel. The entrance to the walk is graced with a dedication monument with 2 directories to be installed the spring of 2006. The memorial is open to all veterans from all branches of service including the Coast Guard and Merchant Marines, whether or not if they were or are residents of Sherman County. Families wanting to honor veterans from other parts of the country are welcome to do so. Contact Person: Annette Gallaway P.O. Box 371, Loup City, NE 68853 (Work 308-745-0222) (Home 308-745-1029)
